MD-25 (a coda)
A short addendum to my last blow-by-blow diatribe, just to put a ribbon on the Mexico Diary. Our Mexico trip had been previously bookended with another trip as soon as we were to return to Vancouver. This was Arif's big adventure, flying to the Netherlands for his last semester of study, on a study-abroad program at Delft University of Technology, to complete his degree in engineering. Whoot!
Our long delays in CDMX had us both quite worried about all that needed to be accomplished before his flight to Amsterdam, which was booked to leave 3 days after arriving in Vancouver. Losing 2 of those days in Mexico City was beyond absurd, and it had me wanting to tear my hair out – which was mitigated only by not having any.
His packing was fast and furious, and we arranged a celebratory going-away dinner the night before his 9 am flight. And during our meal, Arif's flight got cancelled - and he got bumped onto a later, direct flight to Amsterdam. With still so much to do and the pressures running high, dinner serendipitously became a much more relaxed affair. Time had been compressed and then expanded again.
Plastic it is.
On Friday, as I went to pick Arif up and drive him to the airport... the rains came to Vancouver – after 5 weeks of sunny skies while we were away! I think I mentioned this particular sfiga of The Rain Men that we seem to have cultivated... how weird.
It was a deluge of a rain storm - 113-year-old records broken - 43 mm in 24 hours (still, just to give that number some perspective, though, the CDMX storm dumped 50mm... in 20 minutes - twice!)
Needless to say, this rain storm was mighty triggering, nerves shot, we were late already, and getting to the plane on time became a real challenge in dead traffic... mucho deja-vu baby??
Ai Caramba! Che sfiga!
Well, the boxes didn't make the flight, but Arif did... and he made it safely across the Atlantic, with a soft landing in the good hands of old friends (Hi M!), and now he's off to an all-new set of adventures in Europe.
As for me, I just slept all weekend... 😀
I wonder if it will rain in Amsterdam...
As always, thanks for reading and indulging!
